Sublime addition to any Chopin collection By Dean, London Artur Rubinstein once remarked that only native Poles could play Chopin properly. This may have been a gross exaggeration but, listening to this excellent recital, I was tempted to think he may have had a point. It certainly seems to be the case that Chopin recordings by contemporary Polish pianists, even the less well known ones, seldom disappoint, and this one is no exception. Fiderkiewicz possesses the delicacy of touch required for all good Chopin playing, but her sound is also full toned and muscular, and she is responsive to the stormy, unsettled emotions that characterise so much of Chopin’s music. I found her renditions of the brooding Opus 48 Nocturnes particularly impressive, but she is equally at home in the Mazurkas and Ballade No. 3. This CD can be recommended without hesitation to anyone interested in building a Chopin collection.
